City cracks down on eyesores

A 2 hour mini blitz on September 28th resulted in 34 violations for tall grass, inoperable vehicles, concrete and debris, and other issues. Inspectors sent out warning letters and completed reinspections 6 days later to see if residents took care of the problems. Tracy Stebbins, neighborhood Services Coordinator, called the Blitz a success. "We found violations and people are fixing them", he said.

The city has now been divided up into 4 areas that will be hit twice a week by Environmental Inspectors. 

Area 1 - North of Voorhees

Area 2 - West of Vermilion

Area 3 - Vermilion to Griffin

Area 4 - Griffin to the Eastern city limits

The 2nd inspection blitz, with inspector teams and a police officer, occurred October 26th and 27th in Area 4. These mini blitzes will be done quite often. "It's a good change for everyone," Stebbins said. "We don't want to fine anyone, we just want compliance." The blitzes are conducted by teams on foot, which allow them to go down alleys and see back yards, and result in more thorough inspections.

The 3rd Blitz occurred in a new area on January 8th.

The city also plans to demolish at least 6 to 12 more dilapidated buildings, depending on funding.
