Major Work Activities:
 | Responsible for residential solid waste collection
throughout the entire City of Danville on a weekly basis. This system
operates five days a week regardless of
weather conditions and/or holidays. Currently includes in
excess of 12,500 stops per week. |
 | Responsible for servicing dumpsters at all City
facilities
and others with connection to City such as Palmer Arena,
Humane Society, Housing Authority and other contract
groups. Service 46 dumpsters weekly. |
 | Provide a separate yard waste collection program for
all
customers throughout the City. This program is also
operated on a weekly basis, Usually April through
December. This material is delivered to a separate site. |
 | Performs a weekly appliance pickup with the assistance
of
other Departmental personnel. The typical Friday has more
than 30 scheduled stops with at least one unit collected and transported
for scrap. Items with compressors require a $10.00 payment prior to
scheduling. |
 | Operation of a Yard Waste Processing Facility. This
site
accepts all yard waste collected by the City, private haulers, residents
and other sources throughout the area. These materials are processed into
mulch, compost, firewood and other products suitable for resale. The
processed materials can be purchased for pickup or delivery. |
 | Assist with neighborhood cleanups and other efforts
intended to improve the appearance of our City.
Quick Facts and Answers: |
 | There are approximately 12,854 stops included in the
weekly routes. |
 | Currently trucks operate on five separate routes each
day for a total of 25 collection routes. A general map of the daily routes
is attached. |
 | Each truck is a rear loading 20 cubic yard, high
compaction, packer and is staffed by three individuals. One operator and
two loaders. All objects must be manageable by two people. |
 | The fleet currently has seven trucks - 5 for solid
waste , 1 for yard waste and 1 for backup. Presently, we must use the
backup on Mondays & Tuesdays to collect all yard waste on those respective
days. |
 | Each truck collects an average of 9 - 10 tons of refuse
each day. That means each worker is lifting about 3 tons every day, What a
Load!!!
* Where can I get Yard Waste Stickers and bags? |
 | Stickers are only sold at the Municipal
Building for $10 each. Bags are available at many department and grocery
stores, costs vary slightly by store.
* Why can't I use any paper bag?
|
 | The Danville/Vermilion County bag is
the only one acceptable to the program. This is to control quality of the
bags, their impact on the composting operation and to provide a small
amount of revenue for the program. Also, no duct tape on the bags and
please follow all directions, including 50# weight limit.
* Why didn't they take my garbage?
|
 | It is our goal to remove all the
material every day. However, containers and/or bags weighing more than 50
pounds, other than City toters, are too heavy to dump. All refuse is
required by ordinance to be placed in a bag and in a your toter. We continue to work with residents on this issue. Larger
items must be manageable and we recommend they contact 431-
2288 for instructions on any special items. If materials are left behind,
a notice placed on the container or house door should indicate the reason.
You may call the above number with questions.
|
* Toter Guidelines *
 | Beginning November 5, 2007 - ALL
trash is required to be bagged and placed inside of the recently
distributed toters. Your Toter needs to face the street and be at least
2 feet away from any obstacle, and at least 4 feet away from any
mailbox. Your toter MUST be stored inside a garage, shed, or outdoors
near a structure in the side or back yard and returned to that location
no later than midnight of the collection day. Trash is NOT allowed to be
set outside of the toter.
