CITY OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS
Welcome to
Harrison Park Golf Course, the best kept
secret in Vermilion County...but don't take our word for it -
come see for yourself!
History
At the end of 1928, Mr. and Mrs. John Higgins Harrison,
part owner and editor of the Commercial News, purchased land from the
Danville Country Club, and donated it to the City of Danville for the amount
of $1.00 in the memory of his mother Minta. It wasn't until February 13,
1940, that Harrison Park was annexed to the city. Under its current name, 79
years of golf have been played, and the course has seen extensive
restructuring over the years. Initially Harrison Park was a 9-hole facility,
and now boasts an 18-hole, par 71 course. Several holes have been moved,
replaced, shortened, or lengthened, but the original front nine has mostly
remained unchanged.
Another quality which hasn't changed is the beautiful
setting in which the course is located. The North Fork of the Vermilion
River winds through the course and the various hills provide a backdrop
unlike any other golf course on the Central Illinois region. With a total of
235 acres of land, it offers several amenities (bird watching, fishing,
hiking) but golf exceeds all of them.
In the last couple of years, Harrison Park as seen the
addition of a new irrigation system and maintenance equipment program,
giving it the potential to be one of the highest quality golf courses in the
area.
Several projects are now being proposed for the short and
long term future. These projects include the installation of asphalt and
concrete cart paths for the entire course, installation of fairway bunkers
on approximately 8 holes, addition of more unmowed native areas, an
aggressive tree installation and maintenance program, and the installation
of new championship tees.
The City of Danville and Harrison Park have made
considerable strides to increase the golf course's playability and beauty,
and as a team we'll continue to do our best to maintain that tradition.
Harrison Park Golf Course and Clubhouse have had more than 79 years of
memories, and we hope to carry on those memories for many more years. Come
out and make some memories of your own.
