Peer Court Community Service Opportunity Calendar

Character Counts Schedule

 Peers sentence juvenile offenders to 10 – 50 Community Service hours. The offense determines the range of service hours from which the jury chooses. Peer Court arranges the community service hours by updating the following Calendar of opportunities:

Please, look over the following list of service projects with your parents/guardians.  Contact Paul to let him know which of these projects you will be able to work.

Community service work should be taken seriously.  You are expected to commit to the projects below that best fit your schedule.  If you commit to a project and do not show up, Peer Court will add 2 hours to your sentence.  If you do not work up to standards while at the projects those hours will not be counted toward sentence completion. 

Community service is completed with not-for-profit organizations service clubs and local governments.  Community service is NOT completed working for money, working for relatives or baby sitting etc.  You may propose a project that is not on the schedule.  Always check with Katie or Paul first.  You will have to use good communication skills when looking for the contact person of the project.  Introduce yourself and let them know you are a volunteer with Peer Court.

Monday March 3, 2008

Lion’s Club Chili Day work from after school until 8:00 p.m. St. James Church on Vermilion and Williams Streets.    

The organizations below are not-for-profit organizations that sometimes allow Peer Court offenders to work off community service hours doing various tasks.  You may contact them using your best communication skills, let them know who you are and that you are with Peer Court and would like to work with them.  Ask about a schedule.  Commit to a schedule and show up to work.  Do not just go there.  Please phone first.   

County Government: Contact Mike Rortvedt at Vermilion County Coroner’s office to propose a schedule to help him in that office with light clerking/moving etc.  Mike 217-554-6030

Contact Paul for opportunities to work community service on the above dates!

Please, do not tell peer court staff that there were no opportunities to fulfill service hours.  If you are unable to work the projects that are on the calendar please, contact peer court and we will find additional projects. 

From time to time Peer Court will get requests for help on community projects. 

Check in the Katie or Paul at Peer Court to find out if there are additional projects.

Community service hours must be completed with:

-a not-for-profit organization such as; boys and girls club, Laura Lee Fellowship, public library, Red Cross, Vermilion Co. Conservation District, etc.

-a local government such as; a village, town, township, city, parks department, county, Veteran’s Affairs hospital, etc. 

-a service club event such as; Lions Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, AMBUCS, American Legion, VFW, a church etc.

PLEASE check with Paul or Katie before you work a service project that does not appear on our calendar.  

It is your responsibility to inform Peer Court EVERY time your address and/or phone number is changed!!! 

IF you do not complete your sentence within in the 90 contract period Peer Court will send your charge back to the referring court.  YOU WILL BE CHARGED IN THE REFERRING COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The referring court can charge fines and you could have a criminal record of conviction if found guilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Frequently, Peer Court gets requests for help from organizations and service clubs on short notice.  It is in your interest to contact Paul from time to time to inquire about such opportunities.
