City Council

COMPOSITION: The Danville City Council is comprised of 14 Aldermen, two each elected from seven wards, and the Mayor. Half of the Aldermen and the Mayor are elected every four years. City Council and Mayoral elections are non-partisan. A member of the City Council must reside within the City of Danville and meet other normal qualifications to hold elected office. Each Alderman is assigned by the Mayor to one of two Oversight Committees.

CONDUCT OF A CITY COUNCIL MEETING: The Mayor is the presiding officer at the Council Meeting. He calls the meeting to order and assigns an Alderman to lead the Council and the audience in prayer and a pledge of allegiance. Next, members of the audience are asked to make any comment on agenda items. In order to address the Council, the public is asked to fill out a simple card stating their name, address, and what they wish to discuss with the Council. The City Council is divided into two Oversight Committees. During a Council meeting the Mayor asks the Chairman of each Oversight Committee to report on their Committee work for the preceding month. Normally, each Committee will have various Ordinances, and Resolutions to recommend for City Council approval.

Oversight Committees Overview:

Danville's Oversight Committees conduct study sessions each month to review proposed projects, programs, and actions being recommended by the Administration. They also entertain comments and suggestions from the public and other members of the City Council. The public is encouraged to attend these meetings if they wish to provide input into any specific action being considered by the City. This is where the action is. These are detailed working sessions intended to develop final proposals for consideration by the full City Council. Once an issue reaches the City Council meeting, changes are difficult to affect.
